Statement

Emma Rochester’s cartographic art practice is an exploration of the sensory experience of place. One that goes beyond the hard rigorous line of mapping to investiagate the historical culture associated with the mapping process.

Sentient, emotive and responsive her cartographic practice charts an understandings of landscape, place and terrain as felt and knowable, feminine and gentle. Her works exists at the cross roads of artistic mediums from drawing to sculpture, print to moving image. She charts the axis of these modes of expression to create depictions of site specific locations that extend beyond the the digital or two dimensional map to remember the feminine experience of place.

In sum, Rochester's art works invites a re-imagining of place, one which reinserts the feminine experience into 'place knowing'.
